Wii fitness games don't encourage exercise ? Video Games ...

Micorsoft?s Xbox Kinect, PlayStation?s Move, and Nintendo?s Wii, they all make family fitness and health their primary selling point. But do these fitness video games encourage exercise and activity in children well after the console has gone to sleep? A study conducted at Baylor College of Medicine answers just that question.

The study consisted of 78 overweight kids between the ages of 9 and 12 years, and was conducted using Nintendo?s Wii console, which is well known for its motion-sensing controllers. None of the children selected had ever owned a Wii before this study. The 78 kids were split into two groups: the active group was given more fitness-themed games like Wii Fit Plus, Wii Sports, and Dance Dance Revolution. The inactive group, on the other hand, received games that didn?t require as much Wii-mote waggling, like Mario Kart, Super Mario Galaxy, and Disney Sing-it Pop Hits.

The kids wore an accelerometer on their belts to track their activity, and how vigorously they were moving each day over the course of 13 weeks. The results weren?t quite what was expected: the active group averaged 25 to 28 minutes of vigorous activity a day, whereas the inactive group came up with a higher 26 to 29 minute average. There was speculation amongst researchers whether the active group wasn?t exerting as much energy, or if the kids were just substituting Wii exercise with less activity throughout the rest of the day.

As many Wii owners may know, however, it?s entirely possible that the kids figured out that the Wii remote only tracks activity from the upper part of your body. So, exercise game or not?you don?t need to be standing up and moving around in order to play.
