LMFAO's Honduran Concert Goes Up In Flames

Group forced to cut show short after venue's electrical system caught fire and at least 15 fans suffered smoke inhalation.

LMFAO were forced to cut short a Wednesday night concert in Honduras after a fire broke out, filling the venue with smoke and sending fans scrambling for the exits.

According to TMZ, LMFAO were nearing the end of their performance at the Coliseo Nacional de Ingenieros in the capital city of Tegucigalpa when the venue's electrical system reportedly caught fire, filling the venue with smoke. According to reports, no one was seriously injured, though at least 15 fans were treated for smoke inhalation. Local television reports showed fans being escorted from the venue and receiving oxygen. Honduran authorities suggested the fire was intentionally set, though at press time, it was not clear if anyone had been arrested in connection with the blaze.

Immediately following the abrupt end to the show, LMFAO's Redfoo took to his Twitter account, joking, "Epic concert tonight!!!! Everybody in Honduras, we set the place on fire!!!! #sorryforpartyrocking." He then responded to a fan about the fire, writing, "They told us there was a fire when we were on stage. Then we went to the dressing rooms and there was smoke in the halls."

He then changed his tone, writing, "On a serious note, hope everybody is safe from the fire tonight! Love you Honduras!"

A spokesperson for LMFAO's label did not respond to MTV News' request for comment on the matter by press time. Less than 24 hours removed from the fire, the hard-partying duo were pressing on, celebrating the ascension of their hit "Sexy and I Know It" to the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart (knocking off Rihanna's "We Found Love") and prepping for a New Year's Eve gig at the Haze nightclub in Las Vegas, where, hopefully, nothing will catch fire.

Lava flood kills 4 near Indonesian volcano (AP)

TERNATE, Indonesia ? Officials say fast-moving mudflows streaming from the mouth of a volcano in eastern Indonesia have killed four villagers. About 1,000 others have fled their homes.

Mount Gamalama, located in the Molucca Islands, sprang back to life this month with a powerful, non-fatal eruption.

Government spokesman Yusuf Sunnya said Wednesday that days of heavy rains triggered flows of cold lava, rocks and other debris that slammed into villages near the base Tuesday night.

He said four people were killed and more than a dozen others were hospitalized with injuries ranging from broken bones to head wounds.

Indonesia is a vast archipelago with millions of people living on mountains or near fertile flood plains. Seasonal downpours here often cause landslides.

Pandigital Personal Scanner/Converter?5x7 PanScn04

The Pandigital Personal Scanner/Converter?5x7 PanScn04 ($99.99 direct) is one of about 10 scanners Pandigital sells that are basically variations on a theme, with some branded with the Pandigital name and others branded as Kodak. The models vary primarily in the maximum size photo each can scan and whether they can scan strips of film and slides as well as prints. The PanScn04 is one of two models that scans prints only but can scan at up to 5 by 7 inches, making it the obvious choice if your collection of photos includes 5 by 7 inch prints, and you don't need to scan film.

The PanScn04 is nearly identical to the Kodak P570 Personal Photo Scanner ($99.99 direct, 3 stars) that I recently reviewed. In fact, the two differ even less than the Pandigital Personal Photo & Negative Scanner/Converter PanScn05 ($109.99 direct, 4 stars) and it's near twin, the Kodak P460 Personal Photo Scanner ($99.99 direct, 4 stars). At least the PanScn05 and P460 come in different colors, one black and one white. The only obvious physical difference between the PanScn04 and the P570 is the name on the front panel.

This isn't to say that there aren't any differences at all. The PanScn05 comes with a 1GB memory card to scan to instead of the P570's 2GB card. It also comes without Kodak EasyShare, which is basically a photo album program. EasyShare includes commands to print, send to email, and send to Kodak's Creative Center, where you can order photo books, photo mugs, and other products with your photos on them, as well as turn your photos into greeting cards and other items you can print yourself.

Whether Kodak EasyShare comes with your scanner or not isn't much of a difference, however, given that you can download the program from Kodak for free. In every other way, the two scanners seem to be almost identical. I saw little to no difference for setup or scan quality, although I saw a slight difference in speed.

Setup and Scanning
The PanScn04 measures just 1.8 by 7.6 by 3.3 inches (HWD) and offers a 5-inch-wide manual-feed slot in the front with a straight-through path to the back. Setup consists of inserting the supplied 1GB memory card in the front slot and plugging in the power cable.

To scan, you turn the scanner on, optionally set the resolution using a button that toggles between 300 and 600 pixels per inch (ppi), put a photo in one of the two supplied protective sleeves, and insert the sleeve into the input slot. Everything else is automatic, with the scanner grabbing the photo, feeding it, and scanning it to a JPG file, automatically cropping and otherwise choosing settings.

After you finish scanning, you can move the files to your computer on the memory card or connect to your system with the supplied USB cable, wait for the computer to see the memory card as a USB drive, and copy the files. You can also optionally install a utility that will let you scan directly to your computer.

As with the P570, the PanScn04 comes without a photo editor. However, that's consistent with the emphasis on ease of use, since having a photo editor would mean having to invest some time in learning how to use it. The assumption is that you can use the built in tools in your operating system, like the Windows ability to manage, print, and, to some minor extent, edit photos.

Scan Speed
The PanScn04 shares the P570's ability to let you scan almost as fast as the scanner can go. This is usually not true for manual-feed scanners, because the timed speed doesn't include the extra time you'll spend preparing each original or carefully feeding it so it will go in straight.

The PanScn04 eliminates that extra time by coming with two protective sleeves. Start scanning with the photo inserted into one, and you'll have plenty of time to remove the photo from the other sleeve, put the photo away, insert a new photo in the sleeve, and have it ready when the first scan finishes. You'll need a little extra time to insert each photo, but that shouldn't be more than a second or two per photo.

In my tests, whether scanning to its memory card or to a computer, the PanScn04 took a consistent 15 to 17 seconds to scan at 600 ppi, and 15 to 16 seconds at 300 ppi. These times are essentially the same as for the P570 with one exception. Scanning to a computer at 600 ppi took almost twice as long for the P570, a result that was surprising enough so that I retested both scanners to confirm that I had the times right. There are several possible reasons for the difference, including both hardware and software issues, but Pandigital was unable to provide an explanation.

Also, to put these speeds in context, note that the P460 and PanScn05, which both use a smaller sleeve because of their 4 by 6 maximum scan size, took 10 seconds with the same photos at 300 ppi. Even so, the key point is that the PanScn05 is fast enough so it won't leave you feeling like your waiting for it.

Scan Quality
Scan quality, unfortunately, is a close match to the P570's quality, which means it shares the same limitations, with a loss of resolution that comes out as soft focus if you reprint the scans and a loss of both shadow detail (detail based on shading in dark areas) and detail based on shading in bright areas. As with the P570, however, the quality is good enough for casual photographers who just want to get their snapshots into digital format, and don't mind losing some quality in the process.

If you care more about good quality than ease of scanning, you should consider a flatbed scanner, like the Editors' Choice Epson Perfection V300 Photo ($99.99 direct, 4 stars). However, scanning with a flatbed is more cumbersome than using a sheet feeder. Lower quality is the tradeoff you get for the easier scanning. As with the Kodak P570, if you don't mind losing a little image quality and want an easy way to scan your 5- by 7-inch photos, the Pandigital Personal Scanner/Converter?5x7 PanScn04 can do the job, and it may well be the right scanner for your needs.

Comet takes its place as 'Star of Wonder'

Guillaume Blanchard / ESO

Comet Lovejoy streaks through the pre-dawn skies above the European Southern Observatory's Paranal Observatory in Chile on Dec. 22.

Alan Boyle writes

If anyone questioned whether Comet Lovejoy would become the star of the season ? and a lot of people did ? the pictures of the past few days have removed any doubt. In the Southern Hemisphere,?the death-defying comet?is truly?this year's "Star of Wonder."

Not only do we have an amazing video of the long-tailed iceball rising from the horizon, as seen from the International Space Station, we also have the stunning pictures and video released today by the European Southern Observatory. Skywatchers at the ESO's Paranal Observatory in Chile captured the comet against the glittering backdrop of the Milky Way.

"For me, this comet is a Christmas present to the people who will stay at Paranal over Christmas," said Guillaume Blanchard, who snapped?a picture of dawn at Paranal with?the Milky Way and Lovejoy dominating the sky.

Gabriel Brammer put together a time-lapse sequence of the comet rising just before the sun. For devotees of the night sky, it's the latest must-see video. The clip also features the pencil-thin laser beam that Paranal's Very Large Telescope uses as a guide star for its astronomical observations. Expand the video to full screen to?increase the awesomeness.

"With this spectacular sequence of the 2011 Christmas Comet Lovejoy, ESO would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year," the observatory's staff says in today's image advisory.

Amen to that!

I created a Mobil application, and when I click on Live Preview it shows an iPhone simulator.

Is this simulator in the themes \MyApp\App_Themes\...\BaseStyles.css or is it somewhere else?

I'd like to create a simulator for the iPad since that is what we use here in my department, and that is what I need to design for.

Thanks.

The Baking 911 Infographic Gets You Out of Bad Baking Situations [Cooking]

The Baking 911 Infographic Gets You Out of Bad Baking Situations Along with holiday meals comes holiday baking, and whether it's slightly singed bottoms or crunchy cookies that are supposed to be chewy, this guide from America's Test Kitchen can help you get out of serving up bad baked goods.

The Baking 911 Infographic Gets You Out of Bad Baking Situations Most of the tips are best considered before your baked goods go into the oven, so take a peek before you get started, or right before you put your cookies or cakes in the oven. For example, if you find your cookies keep running together and baking connected to each other, it's possible your oven's not completely preheated, or you should just stagger the rows. Also, even though we mentioned using a grater to take off the singed bits of your cookies after they come out of the oven, toss down some parchment paper before putting them in to prevent it from ever happening.

Regardless of whether you plan to make bread, cakes, or cookies over the long holiday weekend, with luck these tips will keep you and your guests or family happy. What baking tips would you add to the list? Share your oven-baked secrets in the comments below.

Ethiopian court finds Swedes guilty of aiding rebels (Reuters)

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) ? An Ethiopian court found two Swedish journalists guilty on Wednesday of helping and promoting the outlawed Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) rebel group, and entering the Horn of Africa nation illegally.

Reporter Martin Schibbye and photographer Johan Persson were arrested in July after they entered Ethiopia's Ogaden province from Somalia's semi-autonomous Puntland region with a team of ONLF fighters.

Sentencing is due next week and the prosecution asked for a combined sentence of 18 years 6 months for both charges. Sileshi Ketsela, one of the defense lawyers, said they would now discuss with their clients about whether to appeal.

Sweden said it was very concerned about the verdict and was making contact with the Ethiopian government at a high level.

"The government takes a very serious view of the verdict today," Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt said in statement.

"Our starting point is and remains that they have been in the country on a journalistic assignment. They should, as soon as possible, be released so that they can be reunited with their families in Sweden," he said.

Addis Ababa has blacklisted the ONLF as a terrorist group, and its recently-adopted anti-terrorism legislation outlaws promotion of the insurgents' activities.

The two Swedes had also been charged with terrorism but were acquitted in November on that count as the court did not believe they were involved in carrying out any attacks. They did admit to crossing the border without a permit.

Judge Shemsu Sirgaga told the court the two journalists had entered Ethiopia illegally under the pretext of investigating the impact of potential oil discoveries and production in the region on the local population.

"Instead they accompanied the ONLF into the country and were caught alongside the rebels. This contradicts their claims," he said in handing down the guilty verdict.

The freelance journalists say they were covering the ONLF as a news story and deny assisting their cause.

During the November trial, prosecutors screened a three-hour video they said was obtained from one of the Swedes' laptops, showing footage of them hoisting rifles alongside armed men and being briefed over a map on how to infiltrate the region.

The editor in chief of Filter, the magazine where they worked, called the journalists "political prisoners."

"I have both a pessimist and an optimist within. For the pessimist, it was really expected, but for optimist it was a shock," Mattias Gransson told Reuters in Sweden.

"When the judge read out the grounds it sounded positive, he had virtually nothing against them. Everything he said was speaking for an acquittal, and then he found them guilty anyway. This indicates they are political prisoners and nothing else."

Atomic refrigerators ? now those are cool

The coolest things of the future might be created using what are essentially refrigerators that work on the atomic level, researchers say.

The level of control over matter that scientists are now developing to create ultra-cold objects could also be used to create entirely new states of matter and super-powerful quantum computers, researchers added.

Scientists routinely cool matter to a few billionths of a degree above absolute zero, the coldest temperature theoretically possible, which corresponds to minus 459.67 degrees Fahrenheit (minus-273.15 Celsius). Still, they would like to chill matter to even-colder temperatures to better understand other extreme phenomena, such as superconductivity, where electrons zip without resistance through objects.

  1. More science news from MSNBC Tech & Science

    1. 2012 Watch: The? countdown begins

Science editor Alan Boyle's Weblog: You'll be hearing a lot about impending doom over the next year, demonstrating the powerful hold that even a bogus doomsday has on the human psyche.

    2. Scientific reasons for Earth?s seasons
    3. Could 'visions of angels' just be lucid dreams?
    4. Ashton Kutcher, friends key to Twitter's success

Now physicists reveal a new way to create ultra-cold matter, with an idea similar to how fridges work. Refrigerators pump a fluid known as a refrigerant around the area they are cooling. This fluid sucks up heat. The refrigerant is then pumped someplace where it dumps this heat.

Chill atoms
First the researchers cooled atoms of rubidium with lasers. When set up properly, these beams can force atoms to glow in a way that makes them emit more energy than they absorb, thus making them colder.

When the atoms gave off light as a result of being hit with the laser, this exerted a slight pressure on them. The scientists took advantage of that pressure to control the atoms, either keeping them in place or moving them around, sometimes creating collisions.

The researchers then made the atoms even colder with evaporative cooling, in which matter gets cooled in much the same way as a cup of coffee loses its warmth ? the hottest atoms are allowed to evaporate, leaving behind the colder ones.

Finally, the researchers used webs of lasers known as "optical lattices." When two atoms are made to collide within the optical lattice, the excitations of one suppress the excitations of the other, a phenomenon called "orbital excitation blockade." The excited atoms are then removed from the system ? taking away entropy, the amount of energy available for work ? thus causing the remaining atoms to chill down.

In experiments with rubidium atoms in optical lattices, the physicists successfully demonstrated they could remove entropy from atoms via orbital excitation blockade. In principle, they can reach temperatures 10- to 100-times colder than currently achieved, to temperatures of tenths-to-hundredths-of-a-billionth of a degree above absolute zero. However, they likely need lasers of longer wavelengths to do so in real life, said researcher Markus Greiner, a physicist at Harvard University.

Exotic matter
Their research could help "create exotic new states of matter, ones never seen before," Greiner told LiveScience. "Who knows what the properties of these materials might be?"

The ability to create perfect arrays of atoms could also be "a great starting point for a general-purpose quantum computer," Greiner said. Quantum computers exploit the bizarre nature of quantum physics ? such as how subatomic particles can effectively spin in two opposite directions at the same time ? to run calculations exponentially faster than normal computers for certain problems.

Research into quantum computers has mostly been on devices designed to each crunch one specific kind of problem, but optical lattices could lead to general-purpose quantum computers that, like modern personal computers, can tackle many different kinds of problems.

The scientists detailed their findings in the Thursday issue of the journal Nature.

New York ? President Obama's health-care bill requires that every American have health insurance. Is that constitutional?

Who first proposed making health insurance compulsory?
The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank. In the late 1980s, when Democrats were pushing to require employers to provide health insurance, the foundation started thinking about ways to achieve universal coverage without placing a heavy burden on business. Its experts soon encountered the "free rider" problem: In a system where insurers are barred from refusing applicants with pre-existing conditions, many people ? especially the young and healthy ? would only buy a policy when illness struck. But if only sick people bought coverage, insurers would pay out more in doctors' bills than they received in premiums, and quickly go bust. To overcome this death spiral, the Heritage Foundation suggested that every American be required to buy health insurance, a requirement known as the individual mandate.

Which politicians took up that idea?
Many Republicans did in the early 1990s, after President Clinton introduced a plan that would have forced companies to cover employees. "I am for people, individuals ? exactly like automobile insurance ? having health insurance and being required to have health insurance," said Newt Gingrich, then House minority whip, in 1993. When the Clinton plan collapsed in 1994, talk of the individual mandate died with it. But a decade later, Mitt Romney, then the governor of Massachusetts, resurrected the concept for his state health-care plan, which requires residents to buy health insurance or pay up to $1,212 in annual penalties. "It's a Republican way of reforming the market," Romney said when the law debuted, in 2006. "[To have] people show up [at a hospital] when they get sick, and expect someone else to pay, that's a Democratic approach."

So why did Obama adopt a Republican proposal?
At first, he didn't want to. During his 2008 campaign for the Democratic nomination, Obama ran a TV ad criticizing rival candidate Hillary Clinton's support for a mandate, saying she would force everyone "to buy insurance, even if you can't afford it." But after President Obama and the Democratic Congress began to construct his health-care plan, advisers warned that free riders would undermine the objectives of extending insurance coverage to anyone who wanted it. For health reform to work, young, healthy people had to be pushed into the pool, to spread cost and risk. So the president allowed his 2010 Affordable Care Act to incorporate a provision that, by 2014, all Americans must have health coverage or face a tax penalty. Conservatives decried that directive as a gross infringement of individual liberty, and their anger helped fuel the rise of the Tea Party. Twenty-six states and the National Federation of Independent Business are now challenging the mandate's constitutionality at the Supreme Court, which will make a final judgment by June.

How has Obama responded?
His administration argues that the mandate is authorized by the Constitution's commerce clause, which allows the federal government to regulate interstate economic activity. Several conservative judges agree. In a November appeals court decision that upheld the mandate, Judge Laurence Silberman, a Reagan appointee, declared that Congress must "be free to forge national solutions to national problems." And this summer, Judge Jeffrey Sutton ? a George W. Bush appointee to the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals ? concluded that the individual mandate is a legally sound way to prevent taxpayers and hospitals from having to pick up the cost of treating the uninsured. "Not every intrusive law is an unconstitutionally intrusive law," he wrote.

Haven't other judges disagreed?
Yes. In August, the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals declared that it could find no precedent for ordering Americans to buy health insurance. "Even in the face of a Great Depression, a World War, a Cold War, recessions, oil shocks, inflation, and unemployment," the majority wrote, "Congress never sought to require the purchase of wheat or war bonds, force a higher savings rate or greater consumption of American goods." Other federal judges and critics of "Obamacare" warn that the mandate sets a dangerous precedent that the government could use to make citizens purchase whatever it deems good for them ? or for the economy. "Congress could require every American to buy a new Chevy Impala every year," said a 2009 Heritage Foundation report.

What happens if the individual mandate is voided?
It depends. If the Supreme Court decides that the Affordable Care Act can't function without the individual mandate, it could strike down the entire law. But it might declare the mandate "severable," and remove that particular part of the law, while letting the rest of it limp along, with far fewer uninsured people covered and less ability to rein in costs. Some experts have proposed that instead of the uninsured being required to buy insurance, they could be "nudged" into the health-care system by giving them a window of time during which they could buy insurance relatively inexpensively; once that window closed, the cost would rise sharply. The problem with any alternative to the individual mandate, said Paul Ginsburg, president of the Center for Studying Health System Change, is that it would have to be approved by the bitterly divided Congress. "You can't expect that in these times," he said. "People don't work on these compromises too readily anymore."

How the Supreme Court could punt
Next year's Supreme Court hearing has been billed as judgment day for Obama's Affordable Care Act. But it might end with no judgment at all. Before the justices rule on the individual mandate's constitutionality, they will first have to decide whether the 1867 Anti-Injunction Act bars the claimants' challenge. That law prevents citizens from challenging the legality of a tax before it goes into effect. If the court finds that the penalty for defying the Affordable Care Act's mandate is a tax, they could push a legal challenge back to 2015, when the first fines will be levied. And that, said Simon Lazarus, an expert at the National Senior Citizens Law Center, might "be a good solution for a court that doesn't really care to be Public Issue No. 1 in an election year."
